You connect a laptop to your phone to send one document. Meanwhile, other apps may see a working Wi-Fi connection and resume their own transfers. To the laptop, a hotspot is still a Wi-Fi network; it should not be assumed to inherit every restriction of the phone’s data plan.
Set the property for this network
In Windows 11, open Settings, Network & internet, Wi-Fi, then the network you are connected to. Turn on Metered connection. Check that you selected the phone’s hotspot rather than your home network.
Microsoft says Wi-Fi connections are normally unmetered by default, while direct cellular connections are metered by default. That distinction matters when a laptop reaches mobile data through Wi-Fi. If the setting is unavailable on a managed computer, ask the organisation’s IT team rather than changing unrelated settings.
Decide which transfers can wait
Metered mode can restrict some background activity. Microsoft notes that Windows Update still downloads priority updates, Store downloads may pause and some automatic syncing may stop. It is not a promise that every app will transfer nothing or that a fixed allowance cannot be exceeded.
Before a long session, look at cloud-sync queues, large downloads and media apps. Pause nonessential transfers using their own controls where available. Avoid opening a large online-only folder merely to check its contents if doing so could start downloads.
Suppose the phone has about 1 GB left and a pending upload is 800 MB. Calling the network metered does not make that upload small. Postpone it or consciously allow it only if the remaining allowance is sufficient for everything else you need.
Check usage and finish deliberately
Compare the phone or operator’s usage information before and after the session. The laptop’s counter can help identify its own traffic, but the phone may also use data independently, and counters may cover different periods.
When you return to your usual connection, resume any transfers you paused and check for pending updates. A useful metered setup saves mobile data without leaving tomorrow’s files unsynchronised by accident.
