GPT-Live and Decisions: agree what a voice agent may actually do

The 15 October API integration lets voice apps make decisions during speech. Define the draft, approval point and final result before connecting actions.

On 15 October 2026 OpenAI added native Decisions integration to GPT-Live in the API. A developer’s voice app can make decisions during a conversation. This is an API capability, not an announcement that every ChatGPT voice account can take the same actions. Agree the task boundary before linking such decisions to real tools.

An agent can do more than produce advice when it has tools. That makes the task boundary important. “Prepare the announcement” does not necessarily mean “send it to everyone”, and access to a service is not the same as an instruction to use every action it offers.

For a voice workflow, distinguish “perhaps send it on Friday” from approval of a specific draft and audience. Ask the app to show the proposed action before sending. If you build the app, enforce that boundary in the tool path as well as the spoken instructions; recognising an intent is not itself authorisation.

State the allowed result

For a fictional club, ask the agent to draft an announcement and save an editable file. Specify the folder and that distribution is a later decision. If you authorise sending, name the audience and content to be sent. Avoid relying on a vague “handle everything”.

OpenAI documents separate controls for permissions, approvals and browser access. Available actions depend on the actual environment, connected accounts and workspace settings.

Keep checkpoints where consequences change

Review the draft before it becomes a public page or message. For file changes, keep originals or a recoverable version. For browser work, inspect the destination account and treat page instructions as untrusted material rather than new authority over the task.

Check the destination

A message saying “done” is not the final verification. Open the saved file, check the changed page or inspect the authorised action's result. Record what succeeded and what still needs attention. Give the agent enough freedom for the agreed steps while keeping consequential decisions and evidence of completion clear.
