On 9 October 2026, Anthropic introduced dynamic workflows in beta for Claude Managed Agents. An agent can organize work across many agents and combine their findings, including reviews of hundreds of documents. That is a developer-platform capability, not a new unlimited PDF button in every Claude chat. Before scaling document work, establish what a traceable answer from one PDF should contain.
A long PDF can be accepted by a service while a particular answer still misses its decisive paragraph. Begin with a narrow question and a stable document version. “Summarise everything” makes it harder to see what evidence was used.
Identify the source and page numbering
Keep the filename, title and version date. Distinguish the page number displayed by the PDF viewer from the number printed on the page. In a fictional document, viewer page 5 might carry printed page 3 because the cover and contents come first.
Claude’s API citation feature can return page ranges for supplied PDFs when citations are enabled. Its documented PDF citations cover extracted text, not images within the PDF. This is stronger evidence of a source location than an invented page number, but the cited passage still needs to support the particular claim. A normal chat request for a quotation does not by itself enable the API feature.
Ask for the relevant passage
Request the answer, section heading, page reference and a short supporting quotation. Open that location yourself. If the assistant cannot locate it, keep the claim unverified instead of accepting a plausible page number.
For a question about a deadline, inspect nearby exceptions and definitions as well as the sentence mentioning the date.
Reduce scope without losing context
If necessary, supply the relevant section with its definitions and a clear page label. Do not cut away a footnote that changes the condition. Keep summaries separate from the original file, and confirm any decisive claim against the document before acting on it.
For a fictional event handbook, ask for the registration deadline and the exception for late additions. Record each answer with its file, viewer page, printed page and short supporting passage. If the main rule and exception disagree, keep both visible until resolved. In a batch workflow, request the same evidence fields for each document and mark missing evidence as unverified rather than silently filling the gap.
