OpenAI added Ultrafast for GPT-6.1 Sol to the Responses API on 8 October 2026. The practical question is whether a faster response is worth its cost in your workflow. This is an API service tier, not a promise of extra tasks in a ChatGPT subscription.
Freeze one useful comparison
Use a fictional document task: turn three meeting notes into decisions, open questions and dates. Keep the input, model and reasoning setting the same. One note deliberately lacks a date; the correct output must leave it unknown.
Record when the request begins, when the complete usable answer arrives and what corrections it needs. A faster stream is not necessarily an earlier finished document if tools, network delays or extra revisions dominate the job. Do not claim measured improvement until you have actually compared runs.
Read the price before switching
As checked on 15 October, Standard text rates are $2 per million uncached input tokens and $10 per million output tokens; Ultrafast is six times Standard. With 1,000 uncached input and 500 billed output tokens, those components are $0.007 versus $0.042. This illustration assumes global processing and excludes tools, caching and other adjustments.
That is not the cost of a complete agent job. Retries and extra billed output change the total. Set an explicit trial budget and keep the previous configuration available.
Check the actual request
Select gpt-6.1-sol and service_tier: "ultrafast" for the API request. The mode has its own rate limits; Sol supports eligible US and EU residency as well as global processing. Check your account’s applicable settings. Compare the saved output and actual usage before making this the default.
