What changed in Gemini
Google announced the Gemini Skills rollout on 30 September 2026. It covers Google AI subscription tiers for adults; Workspace was announced for the following weeks. Check availability in your own account. This is a practical look at that rollout, not a claim of a new launch today.
When available, create a report skill and invoke it with / and its name. Give it fictional notes: “Book A and Book B chosen; meeting date undecided.” The output should retain both decisions and leave the date open. This Gemini interface is different from an OpenAI skill folder; the name does not imply interchangeable installation.
You explain the same weekly report format every Monday. A skill can keep that method together so the assistant can reuse it. It is not a new model or a promise that the next report will be correct without inspection.
Think of a small working procedure
A fictional reading-group report could take three notes, list decisions and leave unknown dates marked as missing. Its skill would describe inputs, steps, output format and what must not be invented. A template or example can help explain the expected result.
OpenAI documents a skill as instructions and supporting resources, usually organised around a SKILL.md file. The exact packaging and invocation depend on the product. Read the instructions for your environment rather than assuming that every service installs the same folder.
Keep access separate
Instructions cannot by themselves grant access to a calendar or file service. Connected tools and their permissions provide that ability. A skill that drafts a report should not silently acquire a sending step just because email is connected.
Check the first reuse
Use made-up notes and inspect the complete report. Does it preserve a missing date, include every decision and stay within the requested format? Correct the procedure if it fails. A useful skill reduces repeated explanation while keeping the work understandable and reviewable.
