AI transparent images: check alpha, not a painted checkerboard

Ask for a transparent export and test the actual file on contrasting backgrounds before using it in a design.

GPT Image 1 was shut down in the OpenAI API on October 23, 2026. When moving a cutout workflow to GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst or Flare, test the actual transparent asset again. Both support background: "transparent" with PNG or WebP; an old preview is not evidence that a new export has the required alpha. This is an API migration check, not a claim that transparency launched today.

A gray checkerboard in a generated image may be painted pixels rather than transparency. A white background can look equally convincing on a white page. Check the exported file, not only the preview in the chat.

Request a supported format

For a supported OpenAI image workflow, current documentation allows background: "transparent" with PNG or WebP output. Check the selected model and endpoint before using those options. JPEG does not preserve an alpha channel.

Use a simple task: one invented ceramic mug, complete handle, no shadow outside the object. Download the actual result and place it over both a dark solid color and a bright contrasting color in an editor.

Inspect edges and holes

Look through the handle and around the rim. A rectangular checkerboard that stays visible is part of the image. White fringes or clipped edges also need correction before publication. Keep the transparent master; converting the final asset to JPEG later will flatten that transparency. A supported setting is a request, not proof that the exported pixels meet the brief.
