Chrome downloads: choose the folder before losing track of a file

Set a default download folder or ask for a destination each time, then locate the saved file instead of relying on browser history.

A download can finish successfully and still seem missing because it went to an unexpected folder. Set the destination in Chrome, then check the file on disk. The website’s preview and Chrome’s download list are not substitutes for that saved copy.

Choose one predictable destination

In desktop Chrome, open Settings, then Downloads. Use Change to select the default location. Alternatively, enable Ask where to save each file before downloading if different projects need different folders. Menu wording follows your browser language; these are computer instructions, not an Android or iPhone path.

For an ordinary workshop handout, choose a project folder you recognise and a clear filename. Keep the extension suggested for the actual file type. Renaming a web page with a .pdf ending does not convert it into a PDF.

Check one small download

Download a small permitted file and wait for completion. Open Chrome’s Downloads list and use its folder control to locate the saved item. Compare its name and destination with the folder you chose, then open it in the intended application. Changing the default destination is for later downloads; move an older file separately if necessary.

Keep history and files separate

Removing an entry from the download list is not the same as deleting the saved file from disk. Conversely, an old entry does not guarantee that a moved or deleted file is still there. Before cleaning up, locate the actual file and keep the copy you need. For a failed download, check the error and destination rather than repeatedly saving duplicates.
