A laptop can start promptly, run your favourite software and still need a decision about its operating system. In 2026, “it works” is only the beginning of the check.
Identify what is actually installed
Open the system information and note the Windows edition and version. Also note whether this is a personal computer or one managed by an organisation. A work device may follow a different support arrangement; ask its administrator before changing it.
Ordinary Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. Extended Security Updates are a separate programme, with eligibility and coverage that depend on the programme and edition. They do not bring back the complete normal support service.
Check coverage rather than assuming it
Read the current Microsoft pages linked below alongside the update settings on your own PC. Check the applicable end date, enrolment status and latest successfully installed security update. A message saying that no updates are available does not, by itself, explain what coverage you have.
Keep a short note of what you verified and when. Programme conditions can change; an old screenshot from a forum is a poor basis for planning.
Choose a manageable next step
Before upgrading or replacing anything, list the applications and peripherals you need. Check their compatibility and make a recoverable copy of your files. Then plan the transition around those needs. Temporary security coverage can provide breathing room, but it should come with a date for revisiting the decision.
