Check the computer clock before investigating a connection warning

A wrong date can affect secure connections. Check the full date and time, distinguish the time zone, and test again without dismissing the warning.

The hour in the corner looks right, yet a website reports a secure-connection problem. Open the full date before changing the browser. A clock can show the expected hour while still using last year’s date. That is an easy detail to miss when you only glance at the taskbar.

Check the whole timestamp

Compare the computer’s year, month, day and time with an independent, reliable clock. Do not use the page currently producing the warning as your only reference. Firefox’s documentation explains that incorrect system time can interfere with certificate validity checks; it does not mean every certificate warning comes from the clock.

In Windows 11, date and time settings are under Settings, Time & language, Date & time. Check automatic time and the selected time zone. A wrong time-zone display alone does not prove the underlying system time is wrong. Avoid compensating for a wrong zone by repeatedly moving the clock an hour: first establish which setting is incorrect.

Repeat the same small check

After correcting an actual discrepancy, reopen the same ordinary page. Keep the comparison simple; changing the browser, network and clock together would make the result harder to interpret. Do not dismiss the security warning or enter account details while it remains unresolved.

If the full date and time are already correct, record the warning and investigate the website or connection instead. If the clock becomes wrong again after a normal restart, note when it happens and what changes. That pattern is useful for support, but it does not by itself identify a failed battery or another hardware fault. A correction that survives a restart is more informative than a clock that merely looks right for a minute.
