Claude announced monthly API credits for Max and Team on 7 October 2026. That makes an old assumption worth revisiting: a chat plan and API billing remain different, even when a plan now includes a specific API benefit. This guide checks the offer on 15 October; it does not announce a new launch today.
Does your task use the API?
Write down what you actually do. Editing letters in a chat and running your own document-processing app are different workflows. Do not count an API balance as more interactive chat or Claude Code allowance.
For a fictional app that labels twelve sample documents, estimate one complete run, including retries. Then compare the estimate with the amount and expiry shown in the offer. There is no reason to spend credit on invented work simply because it is included.
Check before linking anything
The offer requires an eligible plan held for seven days and a linked Console organisation. Unused monthly credit expires. Read the claim screen and its role requirements before linking; verify the intended organisation, not just the account name you recognise.
Record the amount, expiry and what happens when the balance is exhausted. Check existing payment and reload settings rather than assuming the application must stop at zero. If the offer is missing, verify eligibility and ask the provider to explain the account state before upgrading again.
Keep the decision tied to useful work
A paid plan is worth keeping when it removes a real obstacle at an acceptable total cost. Keep a short list of finished outputs and manual corrections. Reassess after an ordinary working week; the presence of credit alone is not evidence of saved time or a reason to buy a more expensive plan.
